What's the best way to fasten knee pads to a gas tank?

I use 3M automotive weatherstrip adhesive, but I've been criticized by some who say it hurts the paint.

I used a gasket product called "Gaskasinch". Not sure of the spelling. It is great for gasket assemblies. It comes with a brush and looks like rubber cement. I put it on one side of the gasket and leave the other side dry. When I disassemble, {say the primary case,} it comes off with the gasket stiill intack.And I reuse the gasket.
Anyway, I brushed on Gaskasinch" to the back of the rubber knee pads and held it in place. You only get one shot at it or it might mess with the paint if you push it around. It never messed up my paint, I used Duplicolor, and the pads stayed in place very well. The excess just peeled off with no damage to the paint. Experiment with it on something similar. You can always use it for gaskets!
I also tried 'rubber cement' but that sucked. I would not recommend rubber cement for the pads. That is what I used on the 59 because I ran out of gaskasinch and had some rubber cement laying around. It took way too long to keep them in place.

here is what I came up with
just a s a background (for example) 1970 tank rubbers were held to the tank by an adhesive that was exposed by pealing back a paper cover (similar to a bumper sticker)

I suppose you could try a spray trim ,or gasket adhesive or gaskacinch as red59 used. I would try 3m Plastic and Emblem adhesive. Either part #08061 or 03601 (same thing different size tubes) The other thing I would try is 3m name plate repair tap (part #06385) or 3m automotive acrylic attachment tape (part #06397). These part numbers are from the automotive division book.

I used the 3m weatherstrip adhesive in the center for holding stregnth and black silicone adhesive around the edge to prevent the yellow adhesive from showing at the edges.

PVA glue is the stuff, impact adhesive, rubber based and doesn't harm the paintwork. Spread it on both the tank and kneepad wait for it to dry, stick together, sorted.
