How much should your valves chatter? I was thinking of tighting them up just a tad. Or does it really matter. I don't think they were this chattery before.

i asked the same question a few months ago. the answer to the "how much" question was somewhere along the lines of "more than you might think," "a lot," and "enough."

it sounds like a sewing maching miked through a marshall stack. ticky ticky ticky ticky.

if a) oil's getting up there and b) you just adjusted them to spec and c) they're locked down and haven't moved, then they're fine. they make noise. it becomes very comforting, like my wife's snore. i can hear the valves over the engine at 70 mph.

I will keep an eye on it. I think it also depends on my carb setup once I get that smoothed out.

Bottom line is....I do not want to blow the engine up.

The valves would have to be very loose to do damage. They only have to be a tiny bit tight to do damage. So, err on the side of loose, if you err. Some engines are noisy and some are quiet...it has to do with the centers of the cam bush holes, idler shaft, and crankshaft main bearing. Ones which are slightly farther apart, are noisy, closer together are quiet.

Both my T140s make a happy clicking sound. It is totally normal but if it really bothers you... try some of the earplugs that swimmers use. It takes the 'edge' off the sound and your ride will be more pleasant.

Cool. I think I am just being picky. You are correct, I will not hear anything with my plugs in.

sorry to drag this old post up the line again however there`s something I need to know:

Aren`t there any bigger (or smaller) gears (camshaft, crank, intermediate) available ?
See, at my ole Shovelhead I once needed to exchange the wheel of the camshaft.
But there are 5 different sized gears available. The diameter differs by 0.01"
With some hardenend steel-pins I borrowed from my local Indie-Shop I was able to find out the correct sized gear (which are color-coded).

Is there something similar available for our ole engish girls ?
Either the tappets or the gears is it intermediate, cams, crank are giving me headache....

btw: Is there a way to get the camshaft out without taking the tappet-block off (and therefoe the cyl.-head) ??

Noisy is okay, just MAKE SURE THEY ARE PROPERLY ADJUSTED!

happyray: You can't pull the cams without splitting the cases. No way around that. To split the cases, you must lift off the top end.
