since i've had my tiger, there has been a mystery rattle that has bugged me.

as i was digging around in the airboxes to get at the side cover and ignition switch, i found that the bolt that holds the left-side airbox and side cover to the frame was just ... missing. some previous owner just decided it wasn't necessary. when i took out the tiny little screws that hold the two airboxes together right up by the carb intake, the left side just fell off!

since mine is a 72 (i.e., not whitworth), i was lucky enough to find a standard thread bolt at Lowe's that matched perfectly. problem solved.

but i'd like to take this 2nd or 3rd-back previous owner out for a burger and a beer one day and ask him what he was thinking about this bike. i can understand cashflow problems, but a $1.50 bolt that will keep big chunks of metal from falling off your bike is worth saving up for.

Quite likely it vibrated loose. Very typical of the old 'uns.

When I got my 72 TR6R I also has one of those bolts missing too. In my experience they're pretty hard to get back in there too so that might have something to do with it. I don't know if this is the explaination you were looking for but can I still have the burger and beer?

If anybody needs any OIF airbox parts, should they have fallen off or something, let me know. I have way too many and you can have them for a very fair price. They are light, so shipping will not kill you..

Mecchanica, I'm too new to the forum to send you a PM but I would be interested in the plastic covers depending on the condition and price. Please send a PM and let me know

"YOU were the previous owner? yeah, i'll take you out for a burger," he said with menace in his eye, punching one hand into the open palm of the other, "i know a great place way out in the country."
