I am trying to install a new boyer ignition and I am not sure how to get the advance mechanism off. I got the weights and springs off but I'm not sure about the last piece that attaches to the cam. It looks like two small tabs are holding it in place but I am afraid to bend them without knowing.

Thanks for any help.

The whole back plate comes out as one assembly. Take the centre bolt out of the cam, and you'll notive a slightly larger thread in the hole. find a 2" or 2.5" bolt that fits in that thread and screw it in at least 0.5".
Two ways from here, given the shaft is tapered. You can either:

Hit the bolt lightly with a hammer up/down and side to side until it comes off the tape

Or (my preferred method) place/hold a small strip of wood against the timing case - above the bolt - to protect the case. Using a claw hammer, put the claw behind the head of the bolt, resting the head of the hammer against the timber strip. One sharp jerk of the hammer, and the taper grip is broken. The whole assy comes off pretty quick, so put something on the ground to catch it - eg rag.

auto advance unit is a taper fit. bending the "tabs" will do no more than destroy a part of the advance unit

one way to remove the unit is as follows:

get a longish 1/4"fine thread bolt

screw same into middle of advance unit until firmly in

clamp onto end of bolt with a vise grip

tap at vise grip with a hammer in a 360 motion

this will break the unit off its taper and allow its removal

Can I just use the bolt that came out of there or will it destroy it?

Put the bolt into it but don't screw it in. Then do as Pete said and give it a good tap. It will release off it's taper.

When you get it off put the weights and springs back on. The unit as a whole goes on and off together.

Got it off but I didn't have time to start installing the Boyer. I will give it a go tonight. Thanks a lot for the help, I am not the ideal Triumph owner because I am not very mechanically inclined but I simply can't afford to pay anyone else to do the work...

A tympanium battery eliminator will not fire an electronic ignition. You need a battery.

I am confused once again; I've got a battery and have always had one. My bike was running with just the points and what I assume to be a tympanium? I thought that the purpose of the tympanium was to replace the zenor diode, not the battery?
