Guys: Should I convert my '59 T110 to a 12 volt? Do people do this?

British Only is liquidating their inventory and everything's 25% off (purchase req. of $150 minimum)...

anyways, they've got this:

ECTRONIC MAGNETO UNIT,12V,K2F PRE-UNIT

SPECIAL NOTE: REPLACES THE MAGNETO WITH A HOUSING WHICH HAS THE BOYER ELECTRONIC STATOR PLATE. MUST ALSO USE BOYER TRANSISTOR BOX, PART NUMBER 06-50106. REQUIRES A 12 VOLT DUAL LEAD COIL, PART NUMBER 06-30123A AND A 12 VOLT BATTERY.

Is this a good idea/chance to get a deal?

If you change to 12V and Boyer, you'll also may have to change:

- all light globes
- indicator flasher can (if your ride has one)
- Zener
- Coils
- Battery
- Alternator stator and possibly rotor
- Possibly rectifier

IMHO, lot's of $$ for only minor benefit.

yea, thanks. Of course one reason not to mess with it is to preserve it for what it is.

My concern is being able to enjoy it as much as possible, and if that were to be helped along by converting to 12v I'd consider it. I just got this bike so I still have to get in tune with it's performance, but I wanted to get some feedback from people who might be familiar w/ magneto performance and the options nowadays.

Thanks guys (and anyone else)

Leave it alone. Preserve the old machines for what they were. Enjoy the nostalgia it has.

what ever you do ,please let us know how it turns out. I went through the same dilema. I ended up using the magneto. I sent it to Joe Hunts magneto and they repaired it for under two hundred dollars. They said it was in the worst condition they have ever seen! I'v had it on my 59 for two riding seasons and it starts the bike easily and runs great. I'm glad I went that route because the generator needs rebuilt too. It does not generate. In time, I may have the generator looked into, but my point is, It'll run good with just a mag.
Also, just my paranoia, but having modern electrics on a bike that vibrates might not be a good idea.
