Hello everybody, I am starting to fix up my 76 T140V and could use a lot of advice.

I just purchased new petrol cocks and sealing washers from Northern Eagle Cycle, screwed them in, and now I have a weeping gas leak on the main side. (I guess the sealing washer isn't doing what it 's supposed to.) Is there anything I can do short of body work to the tank to make the seal work? Of course the old ones worked (slightly larger sized rubber on those.) but where thrown away before I filled up the tank. (#&*!)

Where can I get sealing washers that are closer to the originals? Is there anything else I could try like sealing tape around the petcock threads or rubber washers between the seals and the tank? I really hate burning to death so any help will be appreciated.

P.S. Check it out! a pretty good find, and all I had to do was trade a little work for it.

Essoman,

You could try a bit of plumbers tape around the thread, or some Hylomar. There's also supposed to be a plain washer between the nut on the petcock and the sealing washer (with the rubber in the middle). If this isn't there, the nut will distort the rubber seal, and fuel will leak out via the thread.

Pete

Thanks Pete, I do have the Plain washer in place, I will try the tape. I was worried because I read that gas turns that tape to mush. (It was somewhere in these forums...) Have you tried this?

Essoman,

I just went through the same problem when replacing the petcocks on my 64 Trophy. The rubber centered sealing washers didn't work and as you said they weeped gas. Unlike you I did have my original washers, so I went with those and used teflon tape for the threads. This stopped the leeks. You might look for a hard fiber washer of the proper diameter to seal between the tank and a flat washer that goes on top of the petcock nut. Be sure to clean the underside of the tank where the washer will seat. Lowe's hardware stores have a good selection of fiber washers, I have used them for other sealing issues before. The Lowes I shop at is in Sandy, off the 90th south I-15 exit.....good luck...Pappy

Have you checked back with Dennis at northern eagle. I've used his petcocks with no problems but when i had problem with something he sorted it right away.
