Small correction......only the drum oif forks (71-72) had a taper on the top, the disc forks are machined straight and have clamp bolts in the top and bottom yokes. They are interchangeable as units, but the major parts are not interchangeable.
You might want to fit the progressive springs anyway, they are a significant improvement. If you find that the springs are too short, you can cut lengths of half inch PVC pipe to suit, until you can get replacement springs, or to set the ride height. Progressive Suspension makes a set of micarta rings to replace the o-rings on the damper tube and they significantly reduce stiction. If you refill the forks with synthetic ATF, you will have a longer time between change, as the oil much less hygroscopic compared to mineral based oils. Less corrosion.
The stock axle caps are very brittle and it is common to find broken ones. Forged alloy replacements are available from MAP. The bolt pattern is differnt from the drum brake forks, so they do not interchange. The drum caps do not have the fender stay tab.
