See my last post: Speedo; the final frontier. I was making arrangements to have my speedo repaired when I double checked my manual. It stated that it was rare for the odometer and speedometer to fail simultaneously and to look for a casualty in either the cable or sending unit(sorry the correct name escapes me at the moment.) Now if you might recall from my last post I disconnected the cable and watched it spin as I revved the engine in gear. This would lead me to believe that the speedo itself was defective; however, this new information seems to contradict my findings. Could the cable spin and still not have enough torque to move the unit? Or could it be the sending unit? In addition, how tight should the sending unit be on the axle? Mine is kind of loose and floats back and forth. Thanks, Hank.

Check and see if the brass "grommet" that sits on the speedo end of the inner cable hasn't slipped a bit, which will make the end that fits into the speedo too short. I had this happen once; I twisted it back down on the cable and that cured the problem. Take a look and eyeball the length of square drive on the cable end vs the distance to the speedo's driver.

Just the wisdom of the village idiot speaking: Jim
