i'm looking forward to a good tank strip/repair/repaint sometime in august. it's too hot to ride then anyhow.

i've been doing some research about painting, and i'm thinking about doing it myself with a rattlecan. the duplicolor paints claim to be gas-proof, and they make a rattlecan clearcoat too. i've also seen hi-pressure rattlecans which are interesting.

i'm not looking for a show bike, but a little gloss, protection, and durability would be nice. i'm willing to put a few coats on and sand between.

anybody have brand recommendations? any stories of personal experience to make me reconsider? any procedural pitfalls to watch out for?

So it yourself. I sent mine out for paint in June 2005! I still don't have it. One excuse after another. No names right now. When I get everything back......that's a different story.

I've done my Harley with duplicolour metalflake black with a clear coat over the top.

Make sure the preparation is perfect. This includes filling, sanding and finally washing it down with a good quality wax and grease remover. Make sure you follow the instructions on time between coats and don't do it when it's too humid or wet or windy.

Once you have put on the last colour coat, go straight for a light coat of clear before the colour completely dries, this way you'll get a good bond and it won't flake. I also addes some pin stripe tape before finishing the clear coat. The top clear coat prevents the tape from peeling.

It's not a show job, but the bike is a rider, so it's good enough to look good, but not worry about the occasional stone or weather beating.

See my album for a bit of an idea on what you can do.

Mick

precisely my intention. thanks mick. and duplicolor has a toll-free phone number for product recommendations. i asked the guys at a couple different auto parts stores, and they all told me that i needed to rent a compressor, an air gun, and buy $150 worth of paint -- i wonder why they would say that instead of selling me $20 worth of high-quality spray cans? hmm.

I've done a Duplicolor paint job on my old Honda CX 500 and it looked great, actually better than new to me because Hondas of those years all came in ugly colors, and the CX 500 was ugly by nature. I kept the bike for another year after I painted it and it held up very well. Always looked good.
