What could the reason be for the point gap to differ on a pre-twin? I'm thinking it could be the cam ring has worn oval, or was pootly manufactured, as the points fit snugley.
Should one go modern & use what?
Make a recomendation please.
What shoud one pay -+?
Bushy. :???:

There is a company (I'll find out its name, etc., if you're interested) that manufactures magnetos with electronic timing. Some WWII reenactor friends of mine are running these on their British Army Matchless G3's. They work really well and look like the original unit. They might be a bit salty.

Hi Bill,
Thanks for that, I found the site very very interesting. The price however I dont think would be justified (500pd), that in za rands is -+ R 6250 plus. which is about 1/2 of what most older bikes are worth here.
Bushy.

Jumpin' Jehosophat!!!!!
That's somewhere around 900-odd yankee-dollars! I knew that some of those guys were using them, but had no idea what they were paying for them. Maybe I should round up some old worn out mags and then talk my TV-Radio-Remote Control Model Boat building, computer-nerd buddy into designing new guts for it and go into the business myself!
(Maybe I should find out what those Matchie riders are doing for a living and if their bosses are hiring!)
I wish I could have been of more practical help, Bushy.
Good luck with it.
Bill

Hi Bushy,
Your mag cam ring will give you two different values on the points gap due to uneven cam ring grinding.
(Mass produced and within tolerance back in the fifties)
Even when the unit was new it was almost impossible to get the points to open at the specified .012" each side.
The best way, and the one I have always used, is to get them to open at an average, so if one side is open at say .012 and the other at .016 the you can adjust the points to attain a gap of .014 both sides, this being the average.
I also use a degree disk mounted to the end of the crank on the timing side.
Your 59 T120 should be points just opening at 39ยบ BTDC fully advanced.
HTH
Regards TripleGuy
