I’ve just figured that the breather tube coming from the back of the primary is pretty indicative of a 1970’s engine. (It would appear that a lot of the parts on my bike have been scavenged from a 1971 model) The engine number is TR6P DU 41478 making it a 1966 cop bike, so how on earth did it get this breather, isn’t it all part of the same casting?

I'd like to know what I have here so I can refill her with the correct oil.

Also the tube on the breather is only about 12 inches (300mm) long, do I need to lengthen it? I've heard that there is a filter that can be obtained for the end to stop water from entering.

I don’t have an oil level plug as normal either but an extra bolt in the cover face which I presume is the leveler. I also have an inspection cap, (like the clutch adjusting one), over the Triumph emblem.

Any thoughts on what I actually have here please?

hi captain,
it seems that one previous owner has made the mod(often seen)because the pre70 timed breather located at the left of the inlet camshaft was notorious for "problems".the easiest for you is to buy anf fit the standard 70 breather tube along the rear mudguard(cheap).
the inspection cap over the triumph emblem is standard for 66 engine i think(for strobe light mark i believe).can't say about the presumed oil level bolt(need to see a picture)but beware of putting too much oil in the chaincase; your clutch wouldn't like it!!however if the above mod has been made (breather) you can see the three little holes in the main case(primary one).these holes are the automatic oil level!if you put oil in excess it returns in the main case .assuming you have the three holes, no primary sprocket oil seal fitted the sytem is good and you can the same oil in the primary case than in your motor.

hummmmm!!
it seems the mod is half done!it can work if there is no washer between the main bearing and the primary sprocket but you dont have the automaitc oil leveller.don't put to much oil in the primary chaincase.you may verify if the old breather system has been removed:hard to see;it was a tube coming out the maincase behind the gearbox sprcket(dark and greasy....)
in every case you can stick with motor oil in the primary;it was triumph's specs

I have the three little hole, just didn't know where to look. I have them. So does this mean I have a better engine?

Apparently my cover is off a T140 :-)
