The ARD magneto was a very popular ignition for the builders of flat track and TT triumphs. Very reiable, what you have pictured is NOT an ARD. I would suggest that you contact someone who is active in AHRMA flat track, John Skinner in Alabama comes to mind, He specializes in '70's british flat track gear. You should be able to find contact info for him @ www.AHRMA.org If John can't help you, try Beno Rodi, his info should also be available on AHRMA's website.
If you strike out with John and Beno, let me know, I have several friends that are old Triumph flattrackers we could get some leads from. Good luck.

A guy on ebay is selling one that looks like this and British Cycle Supply also lists this with this pic.

http://www.britcycle.com/Products/ard_cdi_magneto.htm

I just like how clean it looks and the reliability since 99% of running problems comes down to the ignition problems.

It would be worth it to me to pony up the cash for one.

Would you trust it on a 300 mile ride?

That's where I am at...

Yup I would trust it.

Now lets see a 300mile trip. Is that one way or round trip?

Are you going to visit some one in chicago? Wouldnt that be

about 300 miles round trip from Decatur? Hmmmmm...... :???:

After checking the link to BCS, the ARD you are interested in is a new product that I am not familiar with, it's an electronic capacitor discharge model. The ARD magneto that I was referring to was a traditional mag with points etc. If your intended application is a road bike, why are you considering a magneto? Why not just install a Boyer-Brandson electronic ignition? It will install much easier. It connects right into your existing electrical system, and won't affect the appearence of the bike at all, if you don't tell someone you've installed it, they'd never know. As far as trusting it on a 300 mile ride, a Boyer has a proven record of reliability, but even a stock set up w/ points and condensers is reliable if properly maintained ( I just carry spare points and condensers). If the reliability of the stock ignition system was a BIG concern to me, I'd go Boyer.

Yeah... Chicago!

My points cavity has issues with one of the mounting holes... it's stripped out. Anybody ever have this? If so... how did you fix it? :???: Do they make oversize screws of that type?

I have a Boyer but am iffy about the rest of the wiring. It's 30 years old afterall. With this magneto, it is completely independent of the rest of the wiring system.... a plus in my book.

I guess I should try the Boyer for a while before deciding

It looks expensive. My HFD '69 XLCH had mag only, no battery, from the factory. Night riding, the lights used to dim and flicker, but it never stalled. Mine was the last year for a mag only Sportster. Again I wished I kept it when I came to this part of the country.
