I attempted to do a simple oil change in my primary chaincase today but can’t budge the drain plug. I’m scared to drive it around with a drift or cold chisel in case I damage the case. Any thoughts?

Also I have what looks like an extra screw in the chaincase which, on inspection once I removed the primary cover looks like an oil level plug. I don’t know what else it could be. This machine is made up of so many bits (mostly 1971) I don’t really know what I’ve got. It’s placed on the cover between the two bottom bolt holes from the left and has a Phillips head.
If it helps, my cover has a bung like the one for adjusting the clutch rod above the ‘Triumph’ writing. I’d post a photo if I knew how.

When I finally get it back together I’m presuming I’ll need to put on a new gasket. In the past I always used black silicon but I understand that this is not recommended. Should I put on a paper one? It has what appears to be a rubber gasket on at the moment.

Thanks for your help guys!

So, it would appear that my cover is a 1967 if Roys Saint is true to type as mine is the same. Roys can be seen in the Album

hi captain,
i never use the drain plug ,it's because iprefer to clean thorougly the chaincase and by the way have a look at the primary tension.your gasket look like rubber one but mine too!mine is paper with black silicone!maybe it's your case too.
i use black silicone there and i'll continue to do it;it's not a problem in this place and you can get a leak free chaincase.seems that you have got a modified chaincase with your extra drain hole :why?...i dont know!
hope it helps
ben

Thank you ben, I'm happy to remove the chaincase cover to drain the oil but don't I have to remove the drain plug to get to the chain adjuster?

good question!i dont remember if....beware if you try to remove this damned plug,(i mean the adjust plug not the drain plug in the outer cover).the adjust plug is in the primary case and if you damage the threads which are 14 or 16 tpi youll get in big trouble:it's almost impossible to repair with an helicoil thread as there isnt enough metal around so ...be carefull(dont want to change the two main casings uh!!!?)
maybe someone has previously done a bad sticking job on it?good luck and remember:don't hurry:THINK(we never think enough, that's why we make awfull mistake in mechanic..and in life too..is that so different?)
ben
ps:hope you get it
