I took my TR6 for a run today, still running her in after work on new pistons and reco’d top end. She’s sat for ten years in a barn so now it’s a matter of chipping away at the problems. Today I got a few coming from my gearbox.

It would appear I have a phantom neutral around third gear who comes and goes. It also seems to lock in a gear, sometimes won’t shift down and sometimes won’t shift up. Sometimes it’s first other times it can be second or third yet at other times it is as smooth as a new one.

I had a ratty clutch cable on my return and when I removed it from the bike to replace it I noticed through the inspection plug a milky film in the gearbox indicating water at some stage. I'm going to drain the box and renew the oil but any thoughts gentlemen please?

Definately change the oil, I always use EP90 in my T140 gearbox and works well. Gear changing problems often originate with clutch set-up & adjustment, try that first - easier than a gearbox strip & rebuild.

yesm definitely do teh oil change. Triumph gearboxes generally do not give much trouble... so check outthe clutch as he suggests.

Well, fixed the clutch cable, adjusted clutch push rod and cable and took the beast for a run to warm her up so I could do oil changes. Didn’t miss a gear change at all so I’m keeping my digits crossed hoping all is well. Managed to change the oil in the gearbox ok but the primary is going to be another mission but that’s another thread :-)
