Rebuilding a 68 Bonneville - in the helmet shell end of the harness there are 2 wires, one red and green, one white and green, both ending in double snap connectors. I can't see them in the wiring diagram or work out what they're meant for. Any ideas?
Also, the three spade connectors which go on the ignition switch - I'm not quite clear from the diagram which order they're meant to fit - are there any markings on the switch that tell you which way round they go, or is there just one that has to go in the center and the other 2 on the outside?

Salmon boy,
The Green/red and Green/white are for direction indicators. There should be a wire going from each of these to the indicator lamps onthe stalks - grounded through the frame. Should also be 1 wire from each of these going to the indicator warning lamp in the headshell - no earth, just one wire to each side of the warning lamp.
Not sure on the switch, I'll have alook 4U when I get home from work.
POETS day here....
Pete

Salmonboy,
Don't know if I've got the right diagram, but in general, there should be basically three leads going to the ignition switch. One will have power - brown/white or brown/blue (depending on model and loom), one will supply the light switch (usually brown/white), and one will supply the rest of the bike (ignition, indicators, brake light, etc) - usually white.
You can use a multimeter to check the switch for the right connections. In essence, you can either have the lights having power the whole time, or only when the ignition is on.
So if you want power to the lights when the ignition is off, have the brown/blue (or brown/white depending on loom)[battery/rectifier/zener] and the brown/white[Lights] wires going to the same switch terminal, and have the white going to the terminal that connects to the others when the switch is in the on position.
If you only want lights able to be on with ignition on, connect the brown/white wire[Lights] and the white wire to the same switch terminal, and the brown/blue or brown/white [battery] to the other side of the switch.
Confused? I think I just confused myself....

If you look at the back of the switch there are three terminals. Two of these share a connection and one is by itself. The lone terminal is attached to the white wire. The other two are for the Brown/White and White/brown ( I think those are the two colors) Anyway white to the lone terminal and the other two plug into whats left. no special order for the two colored wires.
As for the others you caught me at work so I can't see my wiring diagram, but the 68 Bonnie didn't have directionals unless they were added later. If no one gives you an answer I'll look this evening. I vaguely remember a red/green wire in my head lamp, but I thought it was to one of the warning lights.

I stand corrected. For the ignition switch, the white and the brown/white that goes to the light switch go to the shared terminal. The other brown/white switch that goes to the Zener diode goes to the lone terminal.

Also the red/green wire connects to the oil pressure warning lamp. I have to check my headlamp to find the white/green wire.

Just wanted to say a belated thanks to both of you for the useful replies, I was away for a while but finally caught up.
I reckon you're right, I may have a loom with indicator wires - despite the 1968 core, this bike is (or was) a complete mongrel; it's now getting to be fairly authentic, though I could never justify what I've spent on it (in retrospect I might as well have thrown away the original bike and just ordered every part in the catalog) ... I know I should really replace the loom, as it's at least 50% insulating tape, but I'm at the stage where I just want to get finished!!!

If you have $150.00 laying around and you don't know what to do with it go for it. Just remember no ones going to see it and if the old one works why spend the money.
