On my speedometer, the small reset knob on the trip odometer has stripped on the inside in that I can not reset the reading back to 0000. I normally use the trip odometer to gauge when I would need to fill up. (Yeah, I could easily remove the tank cap as well. )

As I was able to easily remove the speedometer from its mount, getting the bezel off was a different story. It seems that I would need to apply some gentle brute force and "pry" up the bezel edge from the speedo housing in order to remove the trim and glass. Am I correct in this assumption? Seems like there is an easier way to do this without damaging the bezel, speedo glass, and my knuckles. :???:

And finally, once I get it apart, any tips on re-assembly?

Cheers mates.

BTW, the speedo is a Smith's #SSM 5001 / 00A 1600.

Trudie,

As soon as you start to "pry" the bezel edge, you stuff up the finish on the chrome. It'll never be the same. Been there - not a happy place.
Best advice I can offer is to send it out to a professional instrument repair shop with experience in Smiths. Might cost a bit, but results are worth it. Take a mileage reading before you send it out - hopefully they can set to the same mileage through the repair process.

Pete

Nisonger in New York. On-line for address. Send it in, they'll contact you when done. About 3 wk. turn-around. ONLY place for such work. @ $125 for rebuild. MY recommendation :hammer:

Nisonger told me that they can reset the mileage to zero or what ever you specify.

Thanks all. I'll give Nosonger a call. BTW, I also heard North Hollywood Speedometers in California does a good job with Smiths speedos. Cheers.
