i had my thumb-switches apart the other day, and the plastic frame that held the horn switch (right hand, upper switch, purple wire) broke from age and dryrot.

i thought i'd be clever and switch the horn and hi-beam flasher wire (right-hand, lower switch, blue/white wire).

that makes the horn work, but unfortunately it also makes the horn work INSTEAD of my lo-beam.

i thought about hooking up what seems to be a kill switch red/white wire (left-hand, upper switch) to the purple wire that goes into the horn. that would seem to work, EXCEPT -- that if the red/white wire is a kill switch, it's supposed to be a "contact breaker" and i'm not sure if a "contact breaker" is the same thing as a switch.

there was another switch below the kill switch on the left-hand side, but i'm not sure what it does.

any suggestions?

basically looking for a workaround with the pieces i have. if that's possible, lemme know.

Johnnypence,

Don't know if your wiring is standard or not, or what has been done to the wiring in the past, but the Blue/White wire should not affect low beam. Did you connect the purple/black for the horn in the RHS Switch to the other switch, and disconnect the blue/white from that same switch? or did you cut the blue/white wire in the headshell and connect it to the purple/black wire going to the horn?

Before you go too much further, may I suggest you check the low beam (blue/red) wiring for an open circuit - you may have inadvertantly knocked something....

Pete

For what its worth, my headlight switch went bonkers and as thats expensive on mine, I by-passed the switch and have it on High all the time, 45 watts, wow. I disconnected the low beam all together. No body flashing me at night so all is well. If I decide to spend the dough, JVC has exact replicas with modern internals for both sides of a '79 model ,with lever( black). That's where I,m at for now. Running like a race bike should. Got that little rocker shaft leak. The famous pushrod leak I had stopped after I replaced the OPR.

thanks for both suggestions. i only switched the blue/(i thought it was white) and purple/black wires on the switch, nothing in the headlight. although i have had plenty of occasions to be in the headlight and harness the past few days. i'm willing to work on it a little more.

but flash, again, i like the way you think: until somebody tells you to stop, there's nothing wrong with it.
