hi, i currently have a 2000 885i tiger, but i am now bored with it as it is too uninvolving to own, if anyone has, or knows anyone, who would like to do a trade for a pre-unit t110 or possibly a 500 twin, please get in touch, as i would like to get my hands dirty again, it doesn't feel like bike ownership when you don't get the opportunity to tinker!

fastslug... my sentiments exactly! My pals have brand new machines and were puzzled as to why I would buy something nearly 30 years old. I stayed away from the earlier classics and went with a T140E... for me just the right mix of old & new... plenty of tinkering (believe me) ...but 5 speeds & disc brakes give it one foot in the modern era.
I love sitting on my milk crate in the afternoon and just fiddling away. Next job... new wiring harness.
Best regards,
GCoastDave

the trouble with having both is, now that i'm bored with the tiger, it'll get shoved in the corner and neglected.
found someone interested in doing a deal on a '61 pre-unit t110, matching numbers, lots of money spent and receipts.
possibly do a deal tomorrow, but i'm going to a rally at the weekend, so it must be able to get me there and back, as i'm only going to have four hours available to give it the once over and make sure it's o.k.

Go for it. It's been my experience nothing big seems to go wrong with old triumphs if they are running. Be prepared to maybe a minor electrical problem. Most of the bits seem to hold together good. Mostly riders like me tinkering with them all the time instead of leaving them alone is the only culprit. I made a decision to leave everything alone if it runs, period! If its running, do a routine check, battery water, air, oil etc.. Ask the guy if it's in a good state of tune. If he lies to you, do a job on him when you get back. Be sure to give us a breakdown on your run. It all adds to everybody's experience. Have a good time, don't flog it, and ride safe. Frank

well, gone for it, now the proud owner of a 1961 t110 tiger.
whole new world of motorcycling for the first 30 miles, then something terminal happened in the left pot. So, it's time to see what the previous owner did wrong, and keep my fingers crossed that it doesn't need a re -bore and set of pistons. not to worry, at least i'll get round to repainting the tank now!!!

Congrats on going back to the past in the best way.
What do you mean "something terminal"?
Could just be a fouled plug - extremely typical.

unfortunatly, when i say ' something terminal ' i mean nasty clattering noise from left pot, a little bit of smoke from the left pot, followed by cutting out and oil seeping from the the head on the left hand side. Oh, and the engine no longer turns over.
Given that 95% of the bike is brand new, i'm guessing that the previous owner has done something silly, like not putting the circlip on the gudgeon pin properly. strangely enough, i'm not too bothered! although i would prefer to be out riding it!

Check to see that a tappet has not worked it's way out of the rocker at the valve adjustment inspection caps.
