I usually post in the twin talk section since I own a 2005 Bonneville, but I figured this would be a better spot to ask about an Enfield.

I'm looking at getting a second bike, something to really wrench on. My ownership of the new bonneville has really made me interested in getting an older bike. I spend a lot of time tinkering with the new bike and have just as much fun riding it as I do wrenching it. Only problem is there's not much to wrench on since it runs so well (guess thats not really a problem). I actually considered selling it, to get my hands on an older model Triumph or Norton. Now I'm leaning towards getting a RE as a second bike.

Am I nuts for considering one of these? Anyone here own one?

As long as you don't intend to do any highway miles or "spirited" mriding, you will enjoy the old classis. Get a used one in good running shape, the new ones are not worth the money.

If you want to wrench get a NOTRUN a properly set up and operated Triumph 650/750 twin 63-82 needs no more maintanence than a 650 twin Yamaha '69-83.

I barely ride on any highways with my new Bonneville, probably wouldn't go over 50mph on an older bike. I kinda like putting along.

seems to me you would get along fine with an enfield.. I used to have a 350 way back just for dirt riding...

Well... if your thinking about an Indian made RE... forget it. Poor casting , tolerances are horrid and performance is terrible. You will definately be wrenching alot....along with trying to find good parts.

If your thinking about a true Britt RE... now your talking.

K, When I had a low house payments and was working I had lots of money and more than my share of goodies for 20 yrs. Just before retiring the neighborhood started going to hell. I figured I'd have to move or kill someone and I didn't want to do that. Then you have to worry about their family. So in '96 I built a knew house and my house payment Quadrupled. Two bikes and my 442 w30 had to go. Had a new V-Max in98. Silver with black pipes. Now there is a motorcycle. Bad to the bone. Sold it when I retired and still had a drivers license. Always kept my Triumph. Glad I did. When you live in the fast-lane during your working years you have to make adjustments when you retire. More time to play, less toy's to play with. And you know your wife has to have a fancy car.Oh Well

The best, most reliable bike I ever had was '79, 750 Bonneville Special.
God, I miss that bike.
But, I gave in to the lures of the EVIL H.D. , V twins.
I hindsight, I have to say that Sportsters suck when compared to a Triumph.
After many years of being without a scoot, I started thinking about getting another Brit bike.
15 years ago they could be had cheap, but now things have changed.
I ended up finding a '73 Daytona that was in need of a lot of attn., but for the $250 that it cost me, I'd say it was a good deal.
From what I've found, I'd say that, (here in Maine) as far as Triumphs go, the 500's are much easier to come by.
