Hey all, I'm new out here!
Where is some info about VIN numbers?

Thanks!

(ps, I've already seen a post about this, but it didn't really help me with my number... )

TIA!

You can start here:

Serial Numbers

After October 1969 it got easy to identify:

First number is the month:

A,B,C,D,E,G,H,J,K,N,P,X IS JAN, FEB, MAR, APRIL, MAY, JUNE, JULY, AUG, SEPT, OCT, NOV, DEC, respectively.

and second number is the year:

C,D,E,G,H,J,K,N,P,X,A,B,DA,DA,EA is 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983.

After 1960 they were numbered with a D, for duplex frame, and later a DU, for duplex frame and unit construction engine. The only tables I've seen don't give the months the bike was made, however, if you give us your vin# Dadad can uaually tell you everyhting about when your bike was made. Sometimes I even think he knows who made the darn thing :-D

Hope this helps

Hey! Thanks for the responses!

All I had to go on was a VIN on a website:
G31879

It's supposedly a 1972 Bonnie, but I wanted to double check
Sounds like (after reading the posts) that the dealer forgot to write down another letter from off of the frame/engine.

Numbers match on the bike too. Picking it up on Thursday! Wooo hooo!!!

Again, I'm sure this post might have been redundant, but after my searches (and my VIN missing a letter), I had to ask about it.

Thanks again!!!

-Scott

#JG31879 is the VIN... just as I thought.. they left a letter off...

So If I read it correctly, it's Aug. 1972.. what do the other numbers mean?

TIA!

-Scott

(picked it up tonight, btw, and it rules!)

If I have this right, yours was the 31778th triumph 650 built since changing the engine/frame codes in 1969.

Maybe, but probably not. BSA used the same series as Triumph, some built at Meriden and some built at Smallheath. Then there were some that were triumphs' but badged BSA and also some BSA badged Triumph. Don't also forget that the T100's also came in this series....................... confused?
Roy.

OOHHH, :???:

So, since they started with NC00100 you can't take your engine number and subtract 100?

new to bikes and i got a true basket case. but all seames to be there but one box of head lights, turn and signal. and a few badges. but it is the better part of two bikes. one is a BSA (NC6717B25S) and the other, frame, tank and motor is a Triumph (DD09338TR25W) they have been taken a part and preped for restoration. each part was wraped in newspaper labled and put in a plastic bag. i found one of the newspaper dates april 19, 1984 :???: every thing is in good to grate shape. i am only missing the wheels and forks. but if i could get some info on what they are that would be helpful. thanks neil
