First Triumph. I have a '73 T140 that looks and runs good but the clutch seems like it needs more lever. I've checked the plates and they're all about .143-.145" but very spongy. I've adjusted the pushrod adjuster so there's only a very slight delay in pushing the pressure plate and then adjusted the lever for very little slack. With the clutch all the way in, it pulls forward in gear. With the clutch all the way out, it finally doesn't slip. Best guess, cable stretchy, friction spongy, pressure plate flex or not square?

I noticed two odd things, when I put the pressure plate back on, no amount of adjusting the spring adjustment nuts would keep it from lifting off camber and I put new springs in it. The other thing is that I don't think any oil flows through the primary case, what little was there (maybe 2-3oz) was very milky although the oil in the reservoir is nice and black. How much should flow through the primary, how much should spill out when removing the case? What should I be checking?

1 st. I'll leave the clutch rising off camber to some one else. I don't know if the lifting matters as long as when you kick it over with the chain case off it doesn't wobble. This can be adjusted out with the nuts holding the springs. It should run pretty true with the nearest plate with the clutch pulled in. First I back the adjuster on the handlebar all the way off. I adjust my push rod by backing of the lock nut and screw in the screw until just touches the plate and the I back off a quarter turn and the lock down the lock nut while holding the adjuster with a screwdriver. After adjusting the push rod I adjust the clutch. It could be creeping because the clutch is dragging due to adjustment or if it been sitting a long time on the side stand the plates could be sticking alitte. That ought to sort itself out.a No oil circulates through the primary chain case so to speak. The chain case initially holds 5/8 cup oil. The oil level is maintained at that level by a breather valve in the crankcase. The chain case oil is for primary chain lubrication only. The clutch is called wet ,because it is compatible with the oil. It sounds like you had some condensation in the case oil. No big deal, change it. I change mine once a month ( 1/2 cup). I change my engine oil every 500 - 700 miles or twice a year. I don't lay down the miles like I did in the old days. Oils cheap and they don't hold much. I don't know if you have an aftermarket oil filter, but I don't, so I change it often. Get a Haynes or Clymer shop repair manual and a parts book. They are indispensable. Luck with your bike. You probably get more and better replies than this. There is some great guy's with a lot of experience on this forum.
