i've had to drain a full tank a couple different times, so despite the fact that i've only put maybe 500 miles on my bike since i've had it, i've filled it up a good bit.

so what's the deal with the way that vent on the cap squirts gas out the top on a hot day?

even if i fill it up a couple inches below that, if i stop or bank or yank the bike around, gas squirts out. that ain't cool -- does it mean i need a new cap? is it venting properly? is that just something i have to learn to live with? just fill it up lower?

Johnny,
My '71 Tiger has a vented cap but I've never had more than a spit or two come out on a hot day when it has been cranked over on a tight curb. (not that you tend to look down at your tank when your pedalling hard on the twisty stuff )
My only pervious complaint was that when I use to have to park it inside our house, my missus (who has the scent detection qualities of a blood hound), use to complain about the smell of the fuel vapours that sometimes came out of the breather on the cap.
I quickly resolved that by sticking one of those small oval labels you find on skins of apples and oranges over the breather and the problem was solved - no more fumes. I just had to remember to remove it for next ride to allow the air to replace the used fuel in the tank or it may have led to other issues.
Try not leaving you Tiger parked in the sun when the tank is full or simply, if you're not doing too long a rides, you might try not having as much fuel in the tank.

there's so many people on this forum whose answers to mundane questions make me want to buy them a pint of SAE 50-weight. :-g
