Well into stripping the engine down for a refurb. One exhaust valve guide flapping around, so head is in for a fix. Suspected this, with noisy top end and oil being burnt in RH cylinder.

When I pulled the barrels off, I noticed some leftover casting material (sand like substance) and rust deep in between the fins. I've scraped most of it out, but think it needs a decent clean and a repaint.

Can anyone please offer advice or recommendation on:

1) best way to get old paint and rust off the outside of barrels (finned area). eg sandblasting, glass bead blasting, paint stripper ,etc

2) best type of black gloss paint to repaint with, Considering VHT SP-905.

many thanks

Pete

Hey OZ, It's me again. Just finished putting the 77 back together after the winter "lay-over". Hope to put gas in it tomorrow and give it a kick. Can't help you with #1, but for #2 I just use engine enamel from an auto parts store. Works fine. Probly Wall-Mart and such has it, too. As for the cleaning I suppose the bead blast/sand blast route would be the way to go. I always simply coated over what was already there. Looks fine. Putting her to sleep for your "winter"? When it wakes up, who knows what the price of gas will be????

Hi Tri-Al - long time no chat!.

My 77 isn't sleeping this winter, its under general anaesthetic, and having major surgery.

Price of motion lotion just went to $1.42 a litre here - equivalent to $US3.97 per US Gallon, and that's for 91 Octane. 98 Octane is closer to $1.60.

Stay safe this spring/summer, and enjoy the fruits of your labour.

Hi Pete, remove the tappet giude blocks, stuff rags into the bores and mask up the top and bottom and the inside of where the guide blocks fit with gaffer (duct) tape. Then grit blast.
Once blasted clean, remove all masking and wash with a solvent, leave to dry and re-mask using paper masking tape. Then get them powder coated gloss black or if you have one near you even better is stove enammelling. Powder will do a good clean, durable job.
Important to remove the masking tape when the barrel is still warm from the oven, this makes it easier to remove.
Then when cold just wipe the faces with a solvent to remove any traces of residue.
Roy.
