I posted a while back about the jets in the single carb 650 1959 monobloc. I went back to the specs with the settings and jets.
My book calls for a Champion N4 is that a hotter plug than a N3 or B8ES? I have an N3 & B8ES in it & regular unleaded in it now and it runs good, justs fouls the plug after sitting. Probably oil from worn guides.
Anyway, someone said that we cannot get a good looking plug burn on todays unleaded feul. Is that true?
The mag was rbuilt by Hunts Magneto. I have lowered the compression & retarded the spark a few degrees. This bike starts, idles and runs good. No pinking
Any thoughts on the N4s?

N4 is one step hotter than N3. Sorry I dont have an NGK Chart handy. MAYBE just MAYBE your idle adjustment is a tad rich

I always thought the higher the number the colder the plug. Am I wrong?

Running a cold plug will cause fouling. I use to run a hotter plug in my marginal engines to keep them from fouling but it does decrease the life of the plug. If it is oil fouling you should see blue smoke out the exhaust. If it burns off and then stops it is probably your valve guides. If it get worse as it warms up it is probably rings. Also check plug wires. I almost always replace plug wires on used vehicles if they are older than about 10 years. Has cured an amazing number of carb and ignition problems.
