Sounds like you may indeed have a sticking float needle.

I had a similar problem, with floats sticking when priming. a very slight trim of the inside edge of the gaskets, plus a fine file over the "dags" of plastic on the float itself cured the problem for me.

forgive my ignorance, are the dags those prongs that the needle fit into?

thanks

Cat,
The "dags" are the extra bits of plastic hanging out from joins, corners, etc of the float, left after the moulding and joining of the separate parts of the float. Good idea NOT to play with the needle holder tounges/prongs.

Dags in actual fact are the bits of $h1t hanging around a sheep's rear end - we won't go into how I know this.

I apologise for using the vernacular.

Pete

I had the same problem with two new Amals on a '69 Bonnie. Turns out that the combination of trimming the gasket along with making sure that the float bowls are not UNDERSIZED fixed it. The float was hanging up on the gasket where the undersized bowl pushed it into an interference fit.

Easy to fix, once I figured out the issue.

I had the same problem with new carbs. Wound up useing the OLD metal pins & OLD floats. They were "looser".
