Could anyone please refer me to any pics of how the Meriden factory tied down the batteries in their OIF models?
Any hyper-links to pics of how it is done or if you could hit me direct with a pic of how your machine's battery is tied down, it would be most appreciated. I've had a couple of nasty experiences now, where the battery has moved around after a nasty bump and in one case it actually dislodged and opened up my fuse holder and spat the glass fuse somewhere out on the road. An easy fix but I'd love to get this one fixed properly.
Thanks

hi john, as far as i can remember its a rubber strap with wire ends ( loops ) it goes over the battery and attach to the battery cradle front and back, there should be two metal hooked parts for the loops to fix onto.

hope you can understand this

On a 71 OIF rear of battery box has 3or4 slots cut approx 1/3 to 1/2 of the way down. Battery strap threads into these. The loose end of the strap threads into a metal clip which hooks over the front of the battery box.
I use a piece of old inner tube to cover the top of the battery before I hook the strap over. The primary reason for this is that eliminates any chance of the terminals shorting out against the seat pan.

Thanks for the help. I had a good look at the parts manual and after KADUTZ's description I located the slots in the front of the battery frame and a hook on the rear of that frame.
Now knowing that Edward Turner had already OK'd the use of bicycle parts on his Meridan Triumphs in the form of a cotter pin to hold the kick start onto it's shaft, I didn't think he'd mind me following that theme with the use of a bicycle toe strap as my battery anchor :wow:
So I stole a galvanised chain link off my gym set, fitted a toe strap and bingo I now have a battery strap that should never move. Not exactly original but the battery now sits as snug as a bug in a rug and I still have yet to see something that looks remotely original under any Triumph seat I'm lucky enough to get a peak under. So thanks for your help and if any fellow Triumph owners don't have a strap, the one I made took all of 5 minutes to set up and looks quite neat. Have included a link for anyone interested?
