My manual says to use 50 wt. oil for the tranny. I can't see why it should be so light. The tranny doesn't seem to be any diferent than a units that recommends about 80gear oil?
Whats the deal?

red59,
The differance is that was 1959. As of 1967 Triumph recomended E.P.#90 which is now 80-90 .It seem to prevent ware much better. That is all I have used since 1967. But I don't recall using # 50 we used #40 before 1967.

I also switched form 50 wt to a hypoy 90 ( 80/90 wt oil.) The difference was night and day. 50 wt motor oil has none of the additives necessary to make a good gear oil. The gear box was so slick afterwords and I am sure that it will cut wear significantly.

I refer specifically to the viscosity chart as 'interesting'.
I'm sure everyone has already heard the Amsoil propaganda at least once.....
