I have a post on here about the 73 Bonnie 750 I just got. Been strored 20 years. Gas tank was very clean inside. Carbs are still very smooth. I added gas plus octane booster, N3 plugs. I am getting gas to the carbs but not to the cylinders. I tickled the carbs so much that gas was coming out of the ticklers. Not matyter how much I twist on the throttle, no gas to the plugs. I have not had the carbs off yet. I was hoping to not have to bother. Anything I should check? I have never had a Brit bike before but I went by what the manual says. Ignition on (I have power to the plugs), hold down tickler for 5 sec (I have gone way more than that and still nothing), kick like a mule (my heavy breathing proves I followed that step very well). So any ideas? Thanks

try removing the bottom part of the carb, the float and needle may be stuck. while your in there you can remove and blow through the jets. i take it you have checked the oil is returning to the tank when you kick it over ?? if it`s not i wouldn`t start the bike till you get the oil pumping through.

The only way your float bowls can overflow without getting gas to the cylinders is if the intake vales are not opening. Could be the valve lash is too great to actuate the valves, but it's not very likely.

I am far from a Triumph expert but over the years I have owned numerous bikes. Anything that has been sitting for 20 years deserves some very special treatment... carburetors in particular most probably are gummed up inside and at least contributing to your problems. I would remove them, break them down and at least soak them in lacquer thinner for a day or two. Others may know of some more potent liquids & treatments. This may or may not solve your starting problem. But it is certainly something worth doing to help bring this machine back to a baseline situation.

the following are NOT a smart asp questions it is an effort to set a base line
have you ever worked on cycle carbs before?
have you ever had a kick start bike bike before?
1 do not try to start the bike with the sidestand on the ground taking the force of the kickstart.
2 I strongly suspect your idle fuel and air passages are plugged.

I have worked on many carbs before but all from Jap bikes. I have rebuilt the Mikunis on my KZ1000 a few times for drag racing. I was hoping that since the bike was stored with no gas and the bowls were drained that I wouldn't have to bother with them. So much for that. And you are right about not starting it with the kickstand down. I bet that is a way to snap a stand and end up on you butt real quick. I did have it on the center stand. I will try more this weekend. Thanks

Your close on the sidestand thing but you don't break the stand you rip the mounting point from the frame.
going to jump ahead here a little I am assuming the carbs are going to come off. The best description for reattaching the carbs is by Lutz in the thread Idle speed when warm.
also see the thread reattaching amal concentric
ok we going to offer a few suggestion and things that have
worked for me.
ok you are getting fuel to the float bowls and not to the cylinder. Now back up are you getting fuel from the bowl to
the intake trac?
if no remove a carb from the bike and slide assy from the top of the carb and then the float bowl.
clean the float bowl and passages.
check the main jet Isuspect it may be plugged
remove jet holder assy and clean everything
now remove the idle mixture screw I assume the and pass a fine wire down the passage clear the hole(i assume that it is plugged) the wire used on manila tags always worked for me.
also if you look down the top of the carb there are 2 more holes to clean they are located on either side of where the slide rests on the "floor" of the carb (engine side)
I assume you have been spraying with carb clean and compressed air during the cleaning at ALL the holes in the body. If you see carb clean coming out of all the holes you win now you get to do the second carb. If not go back and have more fun with the first.
As far the idle mixture screw turn in to richen mixture
turn out to lean mixture I believe that is the opposite of mikunis
if I missed anything some one will fill it in

KADUTZ: Good catch on the possible plugged main, but I thought he said he had drained the bowls before storage so I assumed (my goof), dry, clear mains.
