Greetings
My service manual refers to a tool
bolted atop the cylinder used to hold
the crankshaft for assembly purposes.
Unfortunately I have no pictures.
Is this something one could make with some aluminum stock?
It must sit below TDC eh?
I would appreciate any references or more info,
Thanks
Chuck

It's a hollow, shouldered bolt that screws in just behind the base of the cylinders. A small pin (with a safety stop) drops down though it and falls into a notch that is cut in the crankshaft. The crank has several notches, so you must first get it close to the correct one, then wiggle it 'till the pin drops into place.

Easy thing to do is order a replacement bolt, drill a 1/8" hole dead-center through the bolt, and use a long drill bit to drop in.

OR - BUY THE TOOL!

Thanks GPaul
I have tool D571 but my literature titled
"Overhaul manual for 650 unit construction triumph motorcycle
engines since 1963"
By Thomas G. Gunn,jr
Truimph corp. Nov.20, 1967
on page 3 says use CD474 engine locking tool on the cylinder barrel and NOT to use D571/2t tdc in flywheel.
What is CD474?
I appreciate any response.
Chuck

Just as reference point the manual referred to was given to
mechanics at the TRI-COR Mechanics Training Center.
It is 18 pages long typed on normal 8.5"x11" paper with no pictures or illustrations.
Tool CD474 consists of 4 parts and is refferd to on page 3 (disassembly) and page 11 (assembly) of this document.

CD474
aluminum block 1"x1"x7 1/8" (Qty 1)
this block has 2 holes (approx 17/32') drilled all the way thur on approx 6 1/2'' centers. It is designed to bolt down to the top of cylinder block using the front outside bolt hole and the rear outside bolt hole in a diagonal manner.
bolt 3/8''(26)x1 5/8" (Qty 2) same as a head bolt but shorter
flat washer 3/8'' (Qty 2)
metal dowel rod (Qty 1) approx same diameter as piston pin and 4 1/2'' long
I would assume you shouldn't use the timing tool as an
engine lock because crank leverage on the tool could fracture the case.

I've never heard of that tool, only the one shown in the Triumph , Haynes & Clymer manuals as I described...

use a small socket (3/8'')and put an 8 mm.drill in it, so you can find this hole in the crankshaft.

on Kawasakis?

A Kawboy!

Thanks KADUTZ
I think I get how the bar stops the pistons Before TDC.
In another place in the instructions, before the barrels are set,
The wrist pin diameter bar would go between the rods above the
square stock bolted(?) to the top of the case.
