While charging the battery I shorted the positive to ground and smoked the harness. I started the bike and it ran. I then stripped the harness and the grounding wire from engine to the neg- battery post was fried. All the rest of the wiring was excellent. I plan to double rap the grounding wire with electrical tape and re rap the harness. My concern is normal heat insulation. Does the grounding wire get hot in normal operation? Thanx much. :???:

Hi Flash..............BANG.................. whoops!
Is the loom original? if it is then I would not even bother, just get a new one and fit it to your bike. They are not expensive and it will be better in the long run.
Although you say there seems to be no other damage, you may not be able to see it and so down the road a piece, JOE LUCAS WILL HAVE HIS REVENGE :hammer:
Roy.

Flash,

Did the same thing - cooked the earth wires from battery to Zener mount, to rectifier, to engine torque stay.

In my opinion, Roy's solution is the best way forward, but if you want to save money and just replace the cooked wires, make sure to check every inch of the surrounding wires to ensure their insulation is not melted as well. Also use a 10Amp (or even 15A) multistrand cable to give you the flexibility you need (don't use sigle strand cable). When re-wrapping the loom, use high quality looming tape. El-cheapo electricians tape tends to come unstuck under heat/fumes conditions.

Regards,
Pete

Thanks. Question; where do you get looming tape? Maybe the auto supply? I checked every wire from end to end and they were fine. I'm going to give it a try and stay close to home for a while and see. 90 bucks is 90 bucks. Thanks again.

3M puts out a vinyl tape called Highland. Great for this sort of work, but a bit on the pricey side, and can be a bit hard to find. It's also flameproof.

Try your local auto-electrician, or a good quality auto sound system installer.

Apart from that, use ordinary electrical tape, but keep some on hand for repairs....

p.s. I only replaced the burnt earth cables in my loom 'cause it was only 2 years old. I still think Roy's suggestion is solid.

Pete

Thanks for the imput guy's. I'll follow up. Thats what I love about this site and Trump lovers in general. Always willing to share experience, good and bad. God bless. I'm thinking about putting a fusible link in the grounding circut.
