Did the same thing - cooked the earth wires from battery to Zener mount, to rectifier, to engine torque stay.
In my opinion, Roy's solution is the best way forward, but if you want to save money and just replace the cooked wires, make sure to check every inch of the surrounding wires to ensure their insulation is not melted as well. Also use a 10Amp (or even 15A) multistrand cable to give you the flexibility you need (don't use sigle strand cable). When re-wrapping the loom, use high quality looming tape. El-cheapo electricians tape tends to come unstuck under heat/fumes conditions.
