Hi Guys
1979 T140E 750. I have a slight oil leak/dribble from the top of the left hand fork. Its running down the back of the chrome shroud (behind where the headlight brackets attach.)
Is this simply a seal I need to replace and what's the best way to do the job?

Any tips would be welcomed.
Thanks
Pete

From your description it sounds like all you need is gasket and/or fork cap. Maybe it just needs tightening. Cheap unit, cheap fix. If I'm over looking something, some one will catch it. Part# 97-4166, WASHER and # 97-7034, CAP SCREW ASSY C/W INSERT. Hope this helps. The cap screws off (careful, Plastic.) I don't know how much fluid you lost, but you might consider changing the oil in both forks, a simple procedure..

Thanks okiecityflash
I will get the bits and fit them.
I may do this when I replace the front tyre at which time I may take the opportunity to replace the rubber gaiters which are starting to split.

When you refit the Top nut which has a large Alley keyway in it, it's best to put a smear of clear silicone around the thread as you tighten, this prevents the oil leakage as you describe.

When you say silicone-do you mean silicone sealant like you'd put round a bathtub?

Yep, like he said...use standard RTV bath sealant. kitchen sealant even comes in Aluminium colours! Instant gasket is the same stuff. It has to be silicone though..not the acrylic that's around... Remember though, you don't need much, you really don't want this stuff dropping off and blocking an oilway..

I had a similar issue, and ended up using blue Hylomar sealant in the threads of the top nut (the bit with the allen key hole). It stopped most of the problem, but I still get occasional minor leaks.

Questions - Does silicon act like glue, and make the top nut extremely hard to unscrew? Is the silicon effected (ie degraded) by ATF or fork oil?

Pete

Try getting hold of a product called Swaq, it is a teflon sealant used by plumbers etc. Just like the tape they use, but in paste form. Stays soft, seals good, is reuseable. No good for head gasket applications etc though. But is good for the fork caps.
