I am upgrading the charging system and need to know how many watt's or amps I need. I know how to figure all the lights and I wont be running any extras like heaters or sound systems, I will be running with the head light on all the time, but I dont know how much the ignition system draws. Which ignition system draws the most current, electronic or stock points? Any suggestions as to what I need?

Any available modern alternator should be automatically matched to the old bike. There are only a half-handful available.

On the 650 I assume?
When you say upgrade the charging system, you'll be looking at a 3 phase alternator stator, & a solid state regulator/rectifier like the PodTronic or Boyer units. As I understand it the original lucas ones were 180 watts (RM21) but I think there might be modern equivalents with an output of 210 watts, unfortunately I can't recall from where.
I'm not really sure what sort of current draw the ignition systems have, but any of the 3-phase units will have sufficient capacity for decent lighting & igniion. I don't know of any source for alternators of greater output than those I've mentioned , although I'm sure they could be custom made if funds were unlimited!.

GrandPaulz,
You must have been typing your much more succinct & accurate reply at the same time as me. It's what I meant to say. It's late at night here (Downunder), that's my excuse & I'm sticking to it.
Regards
cuppa.
