A week or so ago, I noticed a "rough" scoring on the outer (half inch) edge of the rear disk. Thought there might be something caught in there, so dismantled, and took the pads out. Outer (RHS) pad was worn at an angle (greater wear towards the outside edge of the disk, with significantly more wear than the inner pad. Inner pad was worn evenly across the pad surface. Checked both pistons - moving in and out freely and straight. Caliper was re-built 18 months ago - new pistons/seals etc.

Installed new pads. Brake seemed tight, heaps of excess drag. Took it for a brief run to try to bed things in a bit, and found the disc/pad contact was uneven on the outer surface. About a third of the disc had less than full contact - 1/2" of no contact near outer edge. Inner surface was fine - full contact right around the disc. I washed it before I went out, so the disc looks a bit rusty - but good for showing the problem. I'd post the pictures if I could figure out how.

So, anyone got an opinion? Have I got a distorted disk?, a dicky caliper?

Appreciate any advice.

Pete.

OzBloke,
It sounds to me that you might have the caliper strut on the the wrong side of the bracket on the swing arm.You can also have the large washer on the wrong side of the caliper bracket it should go against the speedo drive and make sure the strut is allowed to have some play . It must not be trapped by the sholder bolt make sure that bolt is in correctly .
I would think if the wheel was misaligned both pads would be worn improperly.

Good call, Lutz.

Had the torque stay on the wrong side of the swing arm bracket, causing the caliper to be misaligned with the disk. Washer was in the right place.

Pity the parts book and the Haynes don't show how it goes together. For those with this problem in the future, torque stay goes on the outside of the swing arm bracket - shoulder bolt head on the outside, and nut on the wheel side.

Many thanks for the good advice.

Ozbloke.

P.S. Australia Day holiday today, it's 38C (102F), and bushfires all around the state. Not good for riding....

It seems that when you do need some help the books don't help. I fitted a new tire to the rear awhile back and didn't pay attention to how it came off. Had to be simple, right. The first time it went on, I had the big washer in the wrong place. I couldn't figure it out from the parts illustration. The second time I got it wrong again. I was pissed at myself. The third time I got it right. Only combination left, I think. Washer next to speedo drive. The caliper was centered at last. I'm glad I got confirmation tonight about the big washer.. I wanted to go for a ride that day, it was beautiful. When I got done I was in no frame of mind to ride safely. Took the cage. Sometimes I wonder why I've screwed with them all these years./ Too much said.
