Can someone tell me the easiest way to replace the rocker shaft o-ring seals (left side) on a 1977 750? It seams like I could just backoff the tappets and tap the shafts out enough to get to the o-rings. Thanks

Everything inside the rockerbox will fall out of place the instant the shaft clears the parts (shims, springs, rockers).

Got to remove the boxes and use a special tool to guide the new o-rings into place, or be EXTRA CAREFUL to work them in ever so slowly so they don't pinch, or you'll have it all to do over again.

Make sure and get the new gaskets for the rockerboxes that have the alignment guide holes for the pushrods.

I used to do that with my '68 Trophy. ( i.e. tap the shaft out JUST ENOUGH to replace that O-ring, then slide it back in) BUT, on my '77, I took some Carb cleaner & sprayed it around the shaft, then some brake cleaner ( to try to remove as much oil as possible) then smeared a small amt. of silicone (RTV) sealant around the shaft with my finger. So far, so good! I never removed the old O-ring. It's holding! I used the black sealant. I suppose other colors are availabe, but it's such a small area, you don't even notice it! They make some good sealers nowadays. :hammer:

I used a .50cal machine gun case [suitably chopped up]. The taper on the case was the correct size for the 'O' rings and shaft on the TSS.
I used a brass plumbers fitting reamed out by hand for the Trident and the same for the 750 twins.

10 minutes work to make the tool out of stuff I had just lying around, both work fine.

You can tap them out just enough to do them on the bike, but its a knife edge thing, you cannot use the taper tool, you have to use a knife edge or small screwdriver to depress the 'O' ring.

BonnevilleT120,
Yes the rocker shaft seals can be changed without removal of the rocker box.I also use a small amount of Loc-Tite Liquid Gasket on the shaft and the "O"ring. I have been doing that for 43 years and never had a problem .
