when i first purchased my bike last year (66' TR6R) i asked the forum about what type of oil was best for primary...ATF Type "F" seemed to be the consensus. the service manual says SAE 20....and now i have been reading threads about people using the same 20/50 engine oil in oil tank and primary??? also saying that the primary oil can end up in crankcase, which if that is true, i would think using the same oil in primary would make the most sense.....can someone help clear this up for me, and tell me the best way to go? i am currently using a good grade motorcycle oil 20/50 rated at SG in the oil tank....should i use the same in primary? thanks, Rick

Your primary oil is separate from the crankcase and engine oil.
That was changed in 1970 by leaving out the crankshaft seal,drilling 3 small level holes to drain excess oil out of the primary,and running the crankcase breather off the primary case.'70 onward use the same shared oil in the primary and crankcase.

Light oil in the primary is better for chain life.ATF gives less clutch slippage than light engine oil.The best oil to use is type "F" ATF.It won't mix with your engine oil on a standard '66.
