66' headlight questions...

i'm wanting to find the correct headlight for my 66' 650 bike. the headlight that is on the bike works, and has nice chrome, but i'm sure it's not correct for the bike. the one i have has no amp guage (or hole for one) it has one toggle switch at the top center, and one warning light to the left of the toggle. it says lucas on the glass, so i assume it would be correct for some year?

what is correct for 66'? i know it should have amp guage, but what about toggles and how many warning lights? what are the warning lights for? AND, where could i find a nice one? there is a guy on ebay selling repops complete, do i need the one for RH drive? here is a link to ebay light...(hope posting a link is ok, if not please delete link)

Well if you are talking about a '66 Bonneville, there are options. Depends on engine number if you want to be correct. Pre DU 31565 there was just an ammeter, after that there was an ammeter, warning lights (highbeam and ignition). Those lights on ebay are for cars the lenses should be jeweled, hexagon shape red and green. Also the ammeter should be of the window type so you can only see part of the needle.

Also the lighting switch and ignition switch should be in the sidepanel.

Three options for 66. The two already mentioned and an intermediate that just had one warning lamp. The lamps were fitted to the centre and behind the ammeter and were next to each other unlike 67 on when they were fitted either side of the ammeter. One thing that does not often get mentioned is the gauge bracket. For bikes with no warning lamp the section of the bracket you can see between the gauges is cut straight. Later versions with warning lamps have a small releif cut so you can see the lamps better. What is the engine on your bike?

sorry, forgot to mention......my bike and engine is TR6R, although it has been set up to look more like a bonneville (dual carbs)

i would think that the Trophy and the Bonny both had same light in 66'?? my bike is a late production 66', 43k something on DU. So none of the lights on ebay are close to being correct? where could a guy find the right light, and what am i looking for? thanks everyone.......Rick

Yes they both used the same lamp and it's like rocking horse **** to find. I'm in the same position and have a plain lamp lined up (just ammeter hole) that I'm going to drill to take warning lamps. You should have two lamps mounted side by side behind the Ammeter, one green one red.

the lights on ebay are not for cars, but for triumph, bsa, etc motorcycles....just wondered if any of them were set up close to what a 66' light would be....seems to me the toggle switch is back a bit far, and might end up close to guage bracket.

You should not have any switches in the headlamp shell what so ever! For 66 the ignition and light switch are in the side cover. The headlamp shell is unique to the 66 model bikes. If you want it to be correct the easy option is to get a repop shell with just an ammeter hole and add the warning lamp holes yourself.
