Speedo and Tacho questions

I have a 750 tiger that was registered in 1978, my frame and engine number tell me that the bike was actually built in Nov 1977.

I have Veglia clocks on the bike which have the blue MERIDEN writing on the faces. The tacho works ok but the speedo is next to useless it is inaccurate but as the speed builds gyrates around so much it actually a distraction. I also have a SMITHS speedo gearbox on the back wheel.

My research seems to suggest the MERIDEN badged clocks should be on very late bikes? Which seems to point that my bike may have the wrong clocks on?

I have spotted a pair of good condition smiths speedo and tacho not far from me, I prefer the look of the smiths clocks, does anyone out there have any idea which clocks I should have on the bike?

Not sure which should be on your bike, but I can say that if you have a Smiths speedo drive unit on the right-hand side of the back wheel, the Veglia clocks are not right.

I bought a pair of pattern Smiths-style clocks (white numbers, orange needles) for my 1980TR7, and they really are very good - the needles have no flicker at all and they are very accurate. I bought them from Monty's Classics and Monty told me they are better than the originals, and I have to admit he's right. They look identical except they don't have 'Smiths' on them.
