handlebar bushes

The old ones were 40 years old and a little knackered. Sourced new ones from Baxters. Removed the old ones and installed the new ones using the sockets and vice method. Everything went well......

Put it all back together and the bars rock worse than before. Pulled the bars and broke out the old trusty Harbor Freight Digital Mic. The only thing really out of sorts appears to be the inner bushing on one of them is about ..040 longer which appears to be the issue. Of course they're installed. I can file the suspect in place but the question is, should the inner metal bush be somewhat level to the top clamp?

No I didn't take attention to the old ones before removal.

Why will I not learn to document before removal and for that matter before installation of the new ones...

Feeling ya pain mate, i just fitted new bushes and they were crap as well, considering fitting solid mount bushes just worried about vibrations through bars etc.

The old bushes in my yoke were just slightly lower top and bottom of the yoke i believe.

Don't beat yourself up on this. I have taken to photographing work as it comes apart as it assists the memory for rebuilding, and is a permanent record for referral.

I recall when I had a similar problem I re-bushed using a solid rubber door stop, ground to fit on the bench grinder. Good outcome for me, and cheaper that buying the actual part.

I can't help you on the bushing (which I re-used), but a little filing to increase to clamp could do little harm one would think. Rubber density would be a factor firming the bars up. RR

Well I got the bushes sorted out. Filed the inner bush to about 1mm and bolted everything back up.

WOW I can kinda sorta use my mirrors!!!

I fitted new bushes and bolted them up pretty tight, but there was a lot of play in the handlbars - but thought this was normal.

When it went for it's annual roadworthyness check (MOT) the guy said there was too much play, but passed the bike.

I used a longer socket bar and gave the bolts a few more turns. What a difference!
