I just bought a set of new exhaust pipes for my '78 t140e. Any tips on removing the old and installing the new? I understand these are push fit. Do the finned clamps have to be removed before the pipes come out or can I take them off once I have the pipes off. How do you ensure a snug fit when installing the new pipes? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

The finned clamps get loosened before pipe removal. When I took mine off, I undid all the bolts and clamps, then started removal from the back, moving toward the engine. Worked pretty well. I think the shop manual says to assemble in the reverse order. And then tighten the bolts.

Your clamps should only be "cosmetic" and not contribute in any way to the pipe's attachment! The pipes "push in" and are held? in by the clamp further down the pipe. I jam mine in as far as I can, tapping witha rubber mallet. You have to do the 2 pipes & cross over pipe as a unit. Then I add some silicone (high heat resistant) to seal around. A threaded set screw from the top of the exhaust port aids in "holding" the pipes in place. Once in, I leave ALONE until "forced" to remove!

Thanks for the replies. This project is on hold for the time being. My left fork seal has developed a serious leak. I had replaced it about 2 years ago. Have disassembled it and found a rough spot on the fork tube. Have a new one ordered from Moore's Cycle Supply. Like that Big Red, also free shipping on orders over 100$. Have also ordered a new petcock to replace a leaking one and a new tail light assembly to fix malfunctioning brake light. Hope to be back up and riding in a few weeks. This is best time of year to ride in Houston area, as summer is too darn hot. One question. Last time I rode the bike idled about 1200 rpm when first started up and then wouldn't drop below 2000 after riding a while. Any ideas on what the problem might be?

About those carbs, now this is just ME thinkin', but a similar thing happened to mine until I wound up buying new carbs 4 it. We should have different carbs, yours should be Mkll's. 'Don't know how similar they are, but what happened to mine was that the slides or pistons in the carbs were getting "stuck" & not dropping all the way down. The carb bodies were "warped". New carbs solved the problem 100%. Not sure this is your problem..
