Thanks for the advice everyone. I am making plans to take the engine apart during the Christmas holidays since I have two weeks off and plenty of time.

tnsen: I do have an OIF model and would appreciate any help or advice. I am planning on adding an oil filter but not sure which way to go. I have been looking at remote oil filter adapters that take spin on type oil filters.

hey jtrip... i think several aftermarket oil filters are available for our bikes....but $$$...also i think most reroute oil lines outside the frame, to a remote location..hampering original look (not sure but i think thats how they do it ) ..anyway, i made my own, i went to auto zone and picked up a stp smo-04 motorcycle filter wich is very close in size to that wire screen filter (how good can that be ? ) i duplicated the bottom plate , then i machined a couple dimples in the inside to accept 2 small rods about 2 in tall...a quick spot weld holds these...on each side of the filter..then i made a small flange to fit over the filter and rod ends wich i threded ...next a couple nylock nuts hold the filter down...that way i have a replaceable modern oil filter...instead of that wire screen...if i knew how to post a pic i would....ill send u a pic if u want...i work in a machine shop so i can do all this myself...i posted this a few monthes ago .....but nobody seemed intreasted so i dident bother to learn how to post a pic....gimme ur e-mail...or tell me how to post a pic here and i wil .....tom

There's a filter that replaces the lower cover / drain assembly. I can't remember who makes it, but I'm pretty sure you can get it from British Cycle Supply. Check their webite. My opinion: you don't need a filter if you change the oil as you should. You can flush / brush/ clean the inside of the oil tank / tube ans the screen with clean kerosene every so often to get out any sludge, just be sure to get all the kerosene back out (I blow it out with my compressor ait hose).

Try a 'TimeWarp' oil filter kit.

They fit up inside the OIF and have a neat bit of plumbing and cooling fins.

They also come in a neato pressed metal lunch box.

IMO they are about the best on the market at the moment.
