Hi all,

A friend of mine has a '69 TR6 chopper and it has this problem. First thing in the morning, when it is cold, and he tries to kick start it, the engine is barely turning over. The kick starter is moving as it should, but it seems that something is slipping and the engine does not turn over most of the time. If he holds the clutch lever in, the clutch releases fine.

He can push start it with no problem. He can also kick start it after it has been warmed up.

What can be wrong? What is the fix?

I assume it is the clutch but I am new to the Triumph bikes and I do not know exactly what is wrong. I have the workshop manual though and I am willing to learn.

Thanks.

If there is some resistance at the kicker, then it sounds like the clutch is slipping, it may just need the springs tightened up, or at worst new friction plates.

I could be completely wrong of course, in which case someone more knowledgable will put us right.

Unless I'm mistaken the clutch slipping keeps the kickstarter from doing its work.

Clutch slipping can have different causes which needn't all be too difficult to cure, so here goes :

- Not enough slack on the cable, handlebar side or gearbox side. Clutch cable not moving freely (stuck somewhere maybe underneath the fueltank or at the handlebars or cable damaged (bent).

- Clutch pushrod hasn't enough slack, can be adjusted from an inspection hole on the primary side.

And then there's the two other things slinky mentionned.

Thanks for all the replies.

Here is some more info.
The cable has enough slack but it may be sticking, as it has a kink in it. The kick starter has friction but not enough to turn over the engine all the times, especially in the compression cycle.

The thing that messes me up is the fact that it slips only when the bike is cold. After it is started and warmed up, I can kick start it all day with no problem. Any ideas about this?

The clutch is more likely to slip when it is cold? As it warms up everything should expand and spring pressure will increase.
