What do the numbers mean?

G'day all
Im sure my question, or one similar, has been asked many times before and I do apologise to those who are sick of seeing it. I have tried looking for the answer myself but found it more challenging than I thought.

I have a T140E, which I was told is an 81 model. The number stamped on engine is T140E NDA 313 53. The same numbers are stamped on the frame, but on the right hand side, not on the left, like all the sources tell me it should be on.

My Question, is my bike an 81, what does the numbers after the NDA stand for, and why would the numbers be stamped on the right hand side of frame?

Cheers.

I understand that some frames did get stamped on the RHS - no idea why.

The numbers after the letters identify the number of the bike in sequence - but I don't know what number represented "number 1" as nobody's ever identified XXX00001 as a bike (X being any letter)

*EDIT - I just read something by John Nelson on Tridents where the engine numbers started at "Letter" 00101

I don't understand how you get those 3 letters

T140 Model - 750cc Bonneville
E Version - Emission Controls
N Month of manudfacture - October
DA Model Year (started Sept of previous yr) - either 81 or 82
31353 Sequential serial number

However by 1982, Triumph were on its last legs and what ever could be shipped was shipped. The serial no 31353, according to my info shows a late 82 model inspite of the month of manufacture being N (Oct).

Suggest you contact VMCC http://www.vmcc.net/library.htm who have the original factory records and can give exact details.
