I'm on the hunt for a pre-unit TR6 project bike, preferably a 1959 model. Anybody know where I can find one? I'd consider any pre-unit TR6, but most interested in a '59. Thanks.

HeavyG, is that single down tube or duplex? I am not in a position to assist in your quest but thought it sensible to ask the question for guys over there who might help. Roy

Somehow I think that the '59 was a single downtube. The '60-'62 models were double downtube and then they went back to single thru the '70 model year; after that it was back to double downtube. The unit construction for the 650's began in 1963.

Correct me if I'm wrong anyone: Jim

You're right Jim, '59 is single downtube, followed by the duplex frame design from 1960-1962.
I'm hoping to find a '59 model, but I'd consider anything from 1958-1962.

I have a 59 650 single carb Trophy. It has a single downtube frame. When you take the engine out or put it in, be sure to have a good support on the bottom of the engine because the frame is bolted together at he bottom of the downtube. I put wood on a hydraulic jack under the motor, with the bike on the service stand.
The 59 is a nice running bike and in my opinion has little vibration.

Thanks for the tip Red. If you don't mind me asking where did you find yours and what kind of shape was it in when you got it?

I was actually looking for a HD Sprint or something to tinker with. I asked some riders at work if they knew anyone with an old Sprint or an old bike in general. To my surprise, one of them said his friend had an old 69 or so Triumph chopper that hasn't run in years. I wasn't into choppers . When I went to see it, I was pleasantly surprised it was a pre-unit. The only thing stock on the front end was the wheel and trees and lower legs! The tank was stock, but all the trim & emblems were gone. STRUTS!No plate mount, side chopper plate mount,Sportster rotten seat. Rust everywhere. No spark etc. A real mess. The Mag was sent to Hunt Magnetos for a rebuild. I'd post a picture of it before & after if I had a way to do it. Maybe I can asked someone at work if they can send it! I rebuilt just about everything, swing arm bushes, about every bearing and bush except the top end. I wanted to see how it handled etc befor putting more bread into it. It runs & handles fine & the top end even sounds well.It does have the typical crack in the head between the bolt hole and valve seat, so I may put a latter top end on it.Are you looking for a stocker, bobber or chopper? I'll keep an eye out.

Hi Red,
I'm looking for something stock or that can be put back to stock. I don't have the budget for a fully restored machine, so I'm hoping to find a project that I can restore slowly as finances allow. The '59 is my favorite of all the Trophy's, though there's not alot of difference in the '58. Its been a long hunt, but I'll turn something up eventually. Let me know if you run across anything. Thanks.

I've got a complete '58 6T Motor / Trans if that's of any interest to you.
