I'm thinking about putting new points in the t140 750. Are there any tricky things I should know?

$10.00 says half the responses tell you to get a Boyer.

I've said it before and I'll say it again; My first set of points in the '70 lasted 23 years, and now I'm running on a set of used ones that came on the point plate that I bought at a swap meet in'93 (or there abouts); no problems with them, and they are simple and easy to adjust. Try to use Lucas points, they do last a long time, believe it or not.

thanks
So your saying I might not even need points since these still make a spark and that's all they have to do. If I just sand them and re set them I can move on to the carb as the source of the problem. The problem being the left cylinder is fouling up the plug with black fuzzy dry carbon. In about 5 miles it doesn't function. I was thinking if the plug wasn't firing every time it could cause this. It seems to miss every other time while idling. With clean new plugs , it runs well once under way.
I have adjusted both carbs the same for idle and air jet. So I'm thinking maybe they are jetted differently. This bike has pea shooter pipes with no baffles so that would make it run rich. But why just one side and not both ?
Next step: take the bowls off and spray carb cleaner up in there ( mikunies) Maybe take the pilot jet out and clean it. see that they are both the same size.

That left cylinder seems to be a common "bugger". As far as the points go, I agree with Ballard- once set properly, they're rarely problematic even though I have since switched to Boyer myself. Prior, though- I didn't really NEED to- just did it as an elective - no regrets. That carboned up plug, however could indicate several things. Is it oil? From where? Valve guides? Valve seats? Piston rings? Maybe try a compression test between cylinders and compare. Maybe a "valve job" is needed. I had a cracked piston ring & didn't know it! I doubt your problem is ignition or carbs if properly set up. But who knows what these things have been through? I bet you're NOT the original owner.

oh please don't tell me that . I so want it to be something cheap. The carbon is very dry Wipes right off with my finger. Not oily at all so I'm hoping it's the carb. I'll check the compression next and tweak the air needle adjustment and see what that does.
thanks
