I've just purchased a 63 T120. I had to repair a sticking check ball in the oil pump and realign the cam plate in the tranny. Everything is going along great. I'm using the Haynes Workshop Manual and it has been helpful till now.
The manual tells me the capacities for the oil, the primary chain case and the gearbox. What the book does not tell me is..... How do you check the levels once you put the oil in ?
OK, the oil tank has a dipstick.....
How do you check the gearbox and the primary ?

The primary cover may have two bolts on the back under side. The upper one is the fill line. Unscrew that one and fill the primary up till it starts to seep out. Or use 350 cc. The gear box I believe takes 500cc

The gear box should also have a plug. This one looks like it has a plug inside of a plug. If you unscrew the smaller of the two this is a level for the gearbox oil. The outer, or larger nut is the drain plug for the gearbox.

So unscrew the smaller on that is seated on top of the larger one. This is located on the underside of the crankcase, just behind the bottom engine mounting bracket, and closer to the gearbox.

If you have a Triumph Workshop Manual, and I suggest you get one if you don't, it is located on page A7, Fiq. A3, number 3.

I got the bike running today, good news... :-)
Oil leaking from primary case.... bad news :cry:
The book says 5/8 Imp pint. So I converted to US and came up with 12 ounces. I put in the oil. It did not come close to the cap in the center of the cover but I figured I'd start with the 12 ounces and see what happened.
Well the oil is "pumping" out of what looks like a breather hole. The hole is located just above the rear-most bolt on the back side of the primary. The oil only leaks when the engine is running.
Anyone have any info that might help ?

The 'hole' located on the back of the primary cover is the fill line. You should have a screw and washer that goes in there. Fill the primary thru the inspection cover until you see oil come out that 'hole' in the back of the primary. This 'hole' should be sealed when your finished.

The only 'breather' I know of is the rotary breathers or the elbow breather on the later models.

The fill/inspection cap is far above the oil level, so don't worry about the oil not coming up to that line. use the level plug in the back of the cover or just put in 350cc.

It is a threaded hole.
Now I've just got to find the right size bolt....

The correct size bolt is 1/4 26 whitworth unless someone changed it .

so you guys have caught me on holiday in Sun River, Oregon. The 1/4" 26 tpi is BSCY not whitworth, 60deg included angle, not 55.
More importantly, if you put 350cc in the primary, it will be far too much and the clutch will never work!
From memory, and I may well be wrong but 200cc in the primary is usually enough. Sooner too little than too much, after all it's only there to lube the chain. Roy.
