If your generator is working well there is nothing wrong with 6Volts.Tou cannot use a capacitor . You can use the regulator and run lights direct from the D terminal but if you want to turn the lights off you must put the switch in the F terminal wire or with lights off the gen will keep charging and the juice has nowhere to go and will burn up the generator.
Switching the diode will not convert the charge from 6V to 12V in an alternator.
There are some convertions available I don't know where .I don't think they are worth the expense if you have a good 6V generator already.
Of coarse that is only my opinion ...
