Guys,

While the frame is away I am planning on starting motor work.

Manual calls for some special tools to remove the cam gears. DO I need those or is there a reliable trick?

I need to replace the small end bushing on the right side (timing side) rod. I don't think I can remove the bushing without taking the whole rod out and putting it in a vice then using a drift.

It would probably be best to make sure the rod it not bent anyway.

Any tips on this procedure would be helpful! thanks

You don't need to take off the timing gears to split the case. There is a special tool to remove them. Its not that expensive to buy. I'm having new small end bushes put into both conrods and they are not prefit. Mine are getting bored out to fit. Someone in here may know if you can still get prefit small end bushes.

If you are planning on splitting the cases, don't forget the two hidden screws in the cylinder bore area. I worked for hours to split my 500 and finally came up with a method which will not fail. It's rather involved so I won't describe it here, but if you encounter difficulty just sing out. By the way, I would not put the rod in a vise nor would I drive the bushing out with a hammer. The manual shows a better way.

Tom is right about a better way.....called a bushing press. Can be done on a shop press easily too....

No hammers! None! Not on a bushing!
