or should i say ...what im doing!! ... i got tired of looking at that old wire screen thinking ...what good can that be doing...so i went to the local auto parts store (auto zone) and found a stp motorcycle filter smo-04, looks about the right size...knocked out that springy thingy with a quick punch with a screwdriver....removed the round rubber gasket bigger hole end, belt sanded the flange down , replaced the rubber gasket..now i work in a shop so i made a replacement bottom plate (saving the original)...im ging to solder a couple of threded (female) peices on both sides of filter so a couple of long machine screws will secure the filter with a homemade flange on top....im almost done...and when i am......VIOLIA....a modern filter that i can change , in my old bonnie...goodby wire screen....ill post some pics as soon as im done....just thought id share ........tom

Charlies of London? made a similar adaptor kit, used a B33? BSA filter. I had one on my T140W, I'm now using a Timewarp filter + cooler kit.

I bought the conversion kit from Dave Quinn Motorcycles.
Major improvement in filtration (IMHO), fits perfectly, worth the investment. (Google search will find his website).

Hi Guys, Charlies' has long gone, when Reg retired. However the "Charlies' Filter" is still alive and available in England and USA.
Simple and effective on all oil-in-frame 650 / 750 twins. It filters the oil BEFORE the pump, got to be good? Roy

Roy,

I have Charlies replacement filter kit fitted to my T140D - where do you get yours from now?

Hi John, Wilemans at Derby or probably Reg Allens. I know Wilemans still do the complete conversion assembly and filters are in stock. Roy

Dagad,

Thanks. Since getting the 97 Tbird the T140D has been pretty much forgotten about, and so am a bit out of touch with the classic scene. Now is the time for a new rebuild.

Also, do I need to get the head changed for unleaded use?

John

Hi John, unless the seats are erroded and or damaged, just use 95 unleaded.
If the exhaust seats are pocketed and you feel they need doing then get them done, but you do not need to replace them AT ALL!
Do you still have the original Rita (Mistral engineering) set up on yor 'D Special' ? If so you should not need to do any timing adjustments. BUT........... each engine is different and you might find it 'pinks' when hot, requiring the timing to be retarded probably less than 1 degree. Roy.

Roy,

Thanks for the reply. Everything on it was to original settings as in the Haynes manual (other than the cartridge oil filter and an oil cooler).

Probably will need a new barrel as already at +040.

Once we start stripping, if the exhaust valve seats are OK then leave them. Check for pinking.

Regards,
John
