Thats just how it should be, those old bikes if adjusted reasonably well were 'reliable' as they were 'go to work' transport. and if you didn't get to work on time you didn't get paid. in my view starter motors were only added because the multi cylinder jap bikes needed a faster engine turn to start them. the brit ( and german) bikes added them in response to demands from teh marketing departments. they weren't really needed. people who complain of lots of kicking had either badly maintained bikes, or a bad practice. being able to wind them over for 10 minute with a starter motor isn't the fix.

incidentally the turning over of the motor to free the clutch is also good, as it pumps oil into the big ends before it starts, thus saving wear at the most critical time.. something a rotary pump wouldn't do like the old piston positive displacement pump.
